Our History
Service 1 Federal Credit Union was chartered August 7, 1940 by employees of Continental Motors. The first office was located in the basement of the Time Office at Continental Motors in Muskegon, Michigan. The original founders wanted a safe and friendly environment where they could save their money; the two services offered were savings and loans. In 1950 the credit union moved into an office on West Western Avenue in Muskegon, where it continued to grow.
Over the years, to better reflect our mission and expanding membership, our name was changed to Service 1 Federal Credit Union. We have evolved into a full-service institution that responds to member feedback, offering numerous progressive services.
Our main office is located on the shores of Lake Michigan in beautiful Muskegon, Michigan at 1075 E. Sherman Boulevard. We serve our members online 24/7 and from six branch locations: three in Muskegon, MI; Mobile, Alabama; Neosho, Missouri; and Shell Knob, Missouri.
Service 1 Federal Credit Union has over 21,000 members and nearly 500 companies in its field of membership.
Our Team
Board of Directors
The Service 1 Federal Credit Union board is elected by the membership to advocate on their behalf and to set the strategic direction of the credit union. Volunteer board members serve two-year terms. Board members are expected to understand and assess increasingly complex financial, business, legal, and regulatory matters. The Supervisory Committee is appointed by the board from among the members of the credit union. Volunteer Supervisory Committee members serve one-year terms. Committee members ensure the Board of Directors and management meet required financial reporting objectives and establish practices and procedures sufficient to safeguard members’ assets.
Our 85th annual meeting was held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, and included a board member election vote to consider for re-election Lew Collins, Gayle Carskadon, Joni Shinn, and Anthony Barajas will take place. The board members were confirmed. The nominating committee was Sue Williams, David Layman, John DeWolf, Kim Bourdo and Britney May.

Membership
Membership is open to select employee groups (SEGs) in our field of membership (FOM) in all states and branches except our Shell Knob, MO branch, whose FOM is anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Barry County or Stone County, MO.
