Tip of the Month

Personal Internet Branch (PIB)

We now offer you another layer of security to keep your personal information safe as you use Home Banking.

Our mission is Partners in Success, #1 in Service and we take this pledge to you seriously. It is our obligation to protect our members from potential identity thieves to the best of our ability. To make sure your online banking experience is as safe as possible, we introduced a new security feature- Personal Internet Branch (PIB).

Here's how it will work: On April 23, 2007, you were automatically enrolled for the new Personal Internet Branch (PIB) security features. The next time you sign on to Home Banking, you will be required to register for your PIB profile. You will be asked to accept the credit union's default settings or create your own custom security settings. Once your Personal Internet branch is set up, you can continue to access your account through Home Banking as usual. Afterwards, when you log onto Home Banking you will enter your account number and PIN on the first page, then you will receive another knowledge-based question to answer, insuring your safety as you enter the site.

Our new security procedures are simple and quick. This is an important addition to your Internet security!

What is PIB?
PIB stands for Personal Internet Branch. Personal. Unique to you. Special. Like no one else.
What is a PIB Profile?
It is a set of security controls that define exactly how Home Banking will behave for you. To put it another way, it is your way of telling Home Banking: "This is who I am and how I like to do things. If someone tries to access my accounts and they behave outside of those rules, it should raise a red flag to Home Banking: it's probably not me!"
What kind of security controls can I choose?
Examples include:
  • What days of the week and times of the day do you want your branch to be open?
  • Which PCs should be able to access your online branch?
  • What types of transactions can be performed?
  • Are there certain types of transactions that should ask for a second confirmation code?
  • Should transfers or other transactions be limited to a certain maximum dollar amount?
  • It's your life, your choice, your branch! Log in now to change your controls.
Is PIB the same thing as Home Banking?
Your Personal Internet Branch is Home Banking. It is where you go to look at your accounts, transfer funds, and take care of other money stuff. It is your PIB profile that is separate. That's the thing that says how you want your home banking to behave.
Think of Home Banking as your own personal branch. Then think of your PIB Profile as the security company you've hired to watch over the branch for you. Pretend they are behind two separate doors, in separate buildings, if you want.
If you need to do something with your accounts, you go to your branch and use the proper key to open that door. If you want to change your security arrangements, you would go to the security company and use a different key to open that door.
Of course in this case, we're not talking about real doors and actual keys, but you get the idea. You'll use one username (or your account number) and a password for Home Banking, and a different username and password for updating your PIB Profile.
You'll be going to your branch (Home Banking) all the time, to check your balances and keep track of day-to-day activity with your accounts. But you may only visit your security company (PIB Profile) one time to set up your profile and once in a while after that to make any changes you want to make to your security arrangements.
Why is PIB being added?
Our mission is Partners in Success, #1 in Service and we take this pledge to you seriously. It is our obligation to protect our members from potential identity thieves as much as possible. To make sure your online banking experience is as safe as possible, we are introducing another security feature- Personal Internet Banker (PIB). Home Banking will appear the same as before, most of the changes will be behind-the-scenes. PIB will be working when you are online and offline to better secure your personal information.
Why do I need PIB?
The increase in the theft of personal information is very disconcerting to credit unions and members. We are implementing the new security feature to protect you and your identity from scammers, identity thieves, and those attempting Phishing scams.
How does PIB protect me?
When entering your account and completing transactions, you will be asked to complete an additional knowledge-based question or enter a confirmation code. These answers will be set up by you when you first implement your PIB.
What is a knowledge-based question?
Knowledge-based questions will be asked when you sign into your account. These questions are unique to each individual. An example is the last four digits of your social security number.
Can I still access my account from multiple computers?
It depends. PIB offers the option of only allowing your account to be accessible from certain PCs. If you select to accept this security feature you will only be able to log into your Home Banking account on the registered computer(s). If you refrain from this option you will still be able to access your account from any computer.
How easy is it to use PIB?
The initial process is very simple. The program will guide you through the steps and allow you to fill in your personal preferences. Once you initially enter your preferences into your PIB there is virtually no maintenance. You only revisit your PIB setting to alter security options. The only differences you will see in Home Banking are to answer knowledge-based questions or input your security code to complete transactions.
What do I do if I'm locked out of my account?
Just as before PIB was implemented, you need to call Service 1 Federal Credit Union to have your Home Banking password reset.
